Why referee?
·         A challenging but enjoyable way to be involved in the great game of rugby
·         An opportunity to see how far you can go – several Toronto referees are at the national and international level.
·         As rugby expands and develops in Canada there is a constant need for new referees.

Where & When would I referee?
·         Some referees focus on the high school season – a great way for university age players to support rugby and make some money during the short April to May schools’ season.
·         Others register as club referees to support their own clubs when needed – an essential role in Ontario rugby.
·         Most are active members of the Toronto & District Rugby Referees Society and are involved throughout the April-August TRU season. There are matches at all ages and levels across the GTA.

Who can referee?
·         Anyone who achieves irb certification, meets the fitness standards, and has membership in the T&DRRS.
·         The level of game you would be assigned to referee depends on your refereeing grade. This grade depends on your experience, performance on the field, and willingness to meet the expectations.

Costs?
·         Level 1 Referee Clinic $100 ($50 for students)
·         Rugby Canada Membership + T&DRRS Membership $230 ($195 for students)
- The biggest part of this is your insurance, which is mandatory for refereeing.
·         Kit  - typically about $40   (some bursaries may be available for new students committing to refereeing)
·         Cost to become an active referee: about $370 (as low as $245 for students, as low as $100 for club referees)

Rewards?
·         Entry level referees typically receive $40 per match (more for some high school games),
·         You’d need to referee 6 or more games to pay off your fees.
·         For TRU matches there is also a partial reimbursement for mileage travelled.
·         The challenge, enjoyment, camaraderie, and a love of the game are the real rewards!

·         Good for 4 years (and see information below regarding recertification).

Costs?
·         Level 2 Referee Clinic $150
·         Rugby Canada Membership + T&DRRS Membership $230 ($195 for students)
                    - The biggest part of this is your insurance, which is mandatory for refereeing.
·         Cost for this season to become an active Level 2 referee: about $380

Rewards?
·         Level 2 referees typically receive $50 per match
·         You’d need to referee about 8 games to pay off your season’s fees.
·         For TRU matches there is also a partial reimbursement for mileage travelled.
·         Development of your refereeing skills - everyone wants to be a better ref!

Future plans for Level 2 Referees:
We hope to be moving towards a “continuity based re-certification” process for future Level 2 re-certification of T&DRRS referees (see next paragraph). Yet another reason to get in on your Level 2 qualification…

Adapted From Rugby Canada’s Match Official Accreditation Policy:
Level 2 Recertification
Level 2 certified referees do not have to repeat their program provided they have maintained continuity* with the sport. In order to be eligible for re-accreditation a Level 2 referee must have been an active participant in the sport and must have addressed certain reaccreditation expectations monitored by each of the Provinces.

There will be four components to the re-accreditation process, including:
·         an activity component involving participation as a Referee, Assistant Referee and/or Referee Coach;
·         an in-service development component that requires attendance and participation at Referee clinics, conferences, seminars, workshops and/or development meetings;
·         completion of updated Law examinations; plus,
·         a fitness component.

*Continuity: Registered with Rugby Canada during some, or all, of the accreditation period but definitely during the last year of the four year period.
